Most people do not consider the health of their feet regularly. Often, it is only when we notice a problem that we begin to think about proper foot care. As with every other part of your body, taking care of your feet is important for long-term health and quality of life. After all, we’re always on our feet! Here are some basic ways you can take care of your feet without breaking the bank or spending too much time.
Wear Good Quality Footwear
It is easy to be attracted to cute styles of shoes for inexpensive prices. However, purchasing high-quality footwear is one of the best long-term investments you can make for your health. Improper shoes without adequate support can cause a variety of different foot problems over time, such as arch spasms, heel spurs, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and so much more. Even despite these foot conditions, it is important to be comfortable too! Shoes that come with arch support will make for a more enjoyable day regardless. Some additional tips when it comes to choosing proper footwear:
- Make sure your shoes are the correct size. If you’re having trouble determining your shoe size, use a shoe sizing guide for reference. Wearing shoes that are too small or tight can cause long-term foot problems.
- Try to eliminate walking barefoot for long periods of time. At home, padded socks, slippers, or slip-on shoes are a great way to provide support while you’re moving around the house.
Keep Your Feet Clean
To some, you’re probably thinking, “I shower every day, so my feet are clean.” Keeping your feet clean requires slightly more effort than just a basic daily shower. Simply getting your feet wet in the shower is not enough. We recommend washing your feet regularly, especially during the summer months. Make sure to dry them thoroughly to prevent odor or the growth of bacteria or fungus. Wash with soap, ideally, and be sure to take the time to wash in between your toes. Keeping your feet clean will help the overall health and appearance of your feet over time.
Examine Your Feet
Most people do not spend time regularly examining their feet. However, it is important to stay on top of potential foot problems and maintain good foot health. Once a week, we recommend examining your feet and in between your toes. When examining, look for bruises, cuts, scratches, redness, swelling, or anything else that seems out of the normal. By looking at your feet weekly, you can catch issues as they come up, which can prevent long-term problems.
If anything seems off, be sure to see your doctor to address treatment options. Especially for people with diabetes, it is important not to ignore foot concerns and to see your doctor promptly. Diabetes can lead to circulatory problems and prolonged wounds on the feet. Even for those without diabetes, if you are experiencing aches, pains, or other foot problems, seeing a podiatrist is recommended. This will ensure that you can treat your foot concerns proactively, rather than waiting until they become worse over time.
Moisturize Your Feet
There are many available creams, lotions, and moisturizers made specifically for the feet or ankles. This is especially important in the dry, winter months where feet are more likely to become excessively dry or cracked. Dry skin can build up on the bottoms of your feet and heels, so moisturizing regularly is a great way to prevent this. As part of your foot care routine, you can also use a pumice stone to target spots that are extra dry. If you are going for regular pedicures, this is something you can ask your nail tech to do regularly too, which will improve your overall foot health.
With a few simple tweaks to your daily routine, you can prioritize the health of your feet and keep them healthy and functioning optimally for years to come!
